Privacy Policy
Ask A Contractor (askacontractor.org) is a questions-and-answers site about home services. This Privacy Policy explains, in plain language, what information we collect when you use the site and the Ask a Question form, how we use it, and the choices you have. The site is intended for a United States audience.
What we collect
Most of the site is free to read with no account and no sign-up. The only personal information we collect is what you choose to type into the Ask a Question form:
- Your name — optional. Leave it blank if you prefer.
- Your email address — optional. We only use it as described in our Email Policy.
- Your phone number — collected only when you check the SMS opt-in box on the form. If the box is not checked, we do not ask for or store a phone number.
- Your question and the trade you pick (for example, Plumbing or Roofing) — this is the content of your submission.
Like most websites, our hosting and analytics tools may automatically record basic technical information such as your browser type, device, general location (city/state level), and which pages you view.
How we use it
- To read, research, and answer your question, and to publish the question and answer on the site (without your contact details — see our Terms of Service).
- To send you the updates you asked for — by email if you provided an email address, or by text message if you opted in to SMS.
- To improve the site: which topics homeowners ask about most, and which answers need updating.
- To keep the site secure and prevent spam or abuse of the form.
We do not sell your information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone. We share information only with the service providers who help us run the site (for example, website hosting, email delivery, and text-message delivery), and only so they can do that work. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
Cookies and analytics
We use basic cookies and privacy-respecting analytics to understand how the site is used — for example, which questions get read most. Cookies help the site remember simple preferences and measure traffic. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will still work for reading answers.
How long we keep it
We keep question submissions and contact details only as long as we need them to answer your question, send the updates you requested, and keep reasonable business records. Published questions and answers (without names, emails, or phone numbers) may remain on the site as part of the answer archive. If you opt out of email or text updates, we keep a minimal suppression record so we do not contact you again.
Your choices
- Skip the optional fields. Name, email, and text updates are all optional — you can submit a question with none of them.
- Opt out anytime. Reply STOP to any text message, or use the unsubscribe link in any email.
- Ask us to delete your information. To request access to, correction of, or deletion of the personal information you submitted, send a request through the Ask a Question form on askacontractor.org and clearly say it is a privacy request. We will respond within a reasonable time.
Children
This site is for homeowners and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the updated version on this page and change the “Last updated” date above.
