SMS Policy
This SMS Policy explains how text messaging works at Ask A Contractor (askacontractor.org). It works together with our Privacy Policy. Please read the Privacy Policy for how we handle your information generally.
Opt-in only — unchecked by default
Text messages are strictly opt-in. The only way to subscribe is to check the “Text me updates about my question” box on the Ask a Question form and provide your phone number. The box is unchecked by default — if you do not check it, we will not text you and we will not collect your phone number. Consent is not a condition of service: you can submit a question and get it answered without ever agreeing to texts.
What the messages are for
Messages are about your submitted question — for example, confirming we received it, letting you know your answer has been published, and occasional follow-ups or related updates about that question.
- Message frequency varies — it depends on your question and its answer, and is normally a small number of messages per question.
- Message & data rates may apply, depending on your mobile plan.
- USA phone numbers only. We accept 10-digit U.S. mobile numbers and store them in international format beginning with +1.
STOP — opt out anytime
Reply STOP to any message to cancel and opt out of text messages. You will receive one confirmation message, and then no more messages will be sent to that number unless you opt in again.
HELP — get help
Reply HELP to any message for help with the text program, including a summary of how it works and how to opt out.
START — rejoin after opting out
Changed your mind? Reply START to resubscribe and start receiving updates about your question again after a previous opt-out.
Carriers
The program is intended to work with major U.S. mobile carriers, but delivery is not guaranteed. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Message delivery can be affected by your carrier, your phone, and network conditions.
Changing or removing your number
To update the number connected to your question, or to have it removed without using STOP, send a request through the Ask a Question form on askacontractor.org and say it is an SMS request. See also our Privacy Policy.
